2021 MCMLA Leadership Election

Chair Elect

Kim Harp is an associate professor and library liaison to the College of Nursing and Nebraska Medicine at the McGoogan Health Sciences Library, University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has been at UNMC since 2018. As an education and research services librarian and liaison, Kim works to assist nursing students and nursing graduate students in learning information literacy and research skills they will need for their future careers. Previously, she was a hospital librarian in Kansas and a legislative reference librarian at the State Library of Kansas. Kim's areas of research include improving library instruction, assessment, and evaluation, diversity in library instruction, and library involvement in clinical implementation of evidence-based practice. Kim has been an active member of MCMLA, MLA and the Nebraska Nurses Association, including participating in committees and as secretary. Kim earned her MLS from Emporia State University. Kim is passionate about ensuring quality patient care by equipping and empowering health care providers tailored instruction and access to information.

As Head of Instruction, Liaison, and Research Services at Webster University Library in St. Louis, Holly Hubenschmidt oversees collection development, instruction, faculty research support, and reference services. She serves as Liaison to the Nursing and Nurse Anesthesia. She has served in a variety of roles with MLA including chair of the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section and ACRL including co-convener of the Global Library Services Discussion Group. She recently completed a three-year appointment to the Continuing Development and Workplace Learning Section of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA.) Holly’s second role at Webster University is Co-director of the Global Leadership Academy. This is a leadership development program for faculty and staff of the university. She was an Academy Fellow in 2013, and at the end of that year was asked to join the team of directors. With this program, each annual cohort comes together for a week three times during the year to explore leadership development, develop a grounded understanding of the university and the higher education landscape in all its complexity, and to create ambassadors to the communities Webster serves. Holly holds a BA in Russian Language and Literature from Washington University in St. Louis and an MLS from the University of Missouri – Columbia. She believes librarianship is the best career in the world.

Secretary

Christi is an Informationist at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Strauss Health Science Library. She manages the AskUs reference service, oversees the MLIS Graduate Assistants, and provides instructional support. She provides evidence based practice instruction for courses within for the Physical Assistant and Physical Therapy programs and provides consultations for students, faculty, and researchers on comprehensive searching and other research topics. She has served as the Chair of the MCMLA Research Committee in the past and currently is a member of the MCMLA Membership Committee.

MCMLA Candidate to MLA Nominating Committee

Emily Vardell is an Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University. She teaches graduate courses on the foundations of library and information science, research methods, reference, consumer health, and health sciences librarianship. Her research interests are in the area of health information behavior with a focus on health insurance literacy and how people make health insurance decisions. Dr. Vardell earned her PhD from the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017 and her Master of Library Science degree from Texas Woman’s University in 2007. She began her medical librarian career as a National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow and then served as Director for Reference and Education at the Louis Calder Medical Library at the University of Miami. Dr. Vardell is a member of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and has served on the 2019 Nominating Committee, as Chair of the MLA Public Health/Health Administration Section, as Chair of the MLA Professional Recruitment and Retention Committee, and Section Council Liaison to the National Program Committee for the 2017 annual conference. She is also an active member of the Midcontinental Chapter of MLA and currently serves as Chair of the Research Committee. She is the Online Updates Column Editor for Medical Reference Services Quarterly where she reviews a health-related database each quarter.
